Now that the leaves are falling from the trees, it’s time to start cleaning the drain grids around your property as the leaves will cause blocked drain gully, prevention is better than a cure. we would always recommend going around the property and clearing out the leaves and debris from the top of the gully grates to keep the gully drains clean and free-flowing.
What is a Gully Drain?
A gully or gully pot or otherwise known as can be made of UPVC material or older construction will be vitrified clay pipe. The is pipe made from a blend of clay and shale that has been subjected to high temperature to achieve vitrification, which results in a hard, inert ceramic.
The gully itself is constructed with a trap or U Bend, the trap or U Bend is designed to stop smells and rodents from coming out of the drainage system. The trap or U Bend is where most blockages will occur in the drainage system. Grease and soap build up in the trap over time causes the gully drain to block up, these blockages are fairly easy to clear if there’s not too much debris in the trap. A mop used as a plunger may clear the blocked drain!
High-Pressure Water Jetting
If you have attempted to remove the blockage with a mop and this has failed you will need to call a professional to clear the blockage with the use of High-pressure water jetting. HPWJ is a machine/technic used by MZR Drainage to clear your blocked gully to drain fast and effectively.
We insert a high-pressure hose with a jetting nozzle to the end of the hose, the hose is then inserted into and around the gully trap or U Bend, the machine is then set to a pressure of up to 3000PSI, and the hose feeds itself down the drain line to the blockage where the hose is worked on this spot to break down the blockage and clear the line.
This blocked water gully drain was caused by an excessive amount of grease from a kitchen drain, the high-pressure water jetting successfully cleared the blockage is a short space of time, leaving the drain free-flowing.

MZR Drainage would advise not to pour excessive grease and fat down your drain as this will go hard a create a build of grease in the sewer system.
